Nearby Scenic Walking Routes & Slieve Aughty Centre

If you love nature trials, walking and hiking then visit the Slieve Aughty Centre in Kylebrack West, situated on the edge of over 2,000 acres of managed forestry, this is the perfect location to enliven your senses. The Slieve Aughty Centre is Ecotourism certified 11 km from Loughrea with lots to do for a day out for young and old, just a 19 minute drive from the hotel this makes for a lovely morning or day out exploring the magnificent countryside of County Galway.
On arriving to the Slieve Aughty Centre, go to the Nature Hut or stop by the reception to borrow a map, and explore the woods following coloured horse shoes. They have pony riding through the enchanted forest with lots of fun kids activities, walking, cycling and much more for for all ages.

Yellow Bog Trail

1.4km

Don’t try this walk without your wellies! Explore the wonders of the bog. Several varieties of moss, cotton grass, carnivorous plants, and the famous bog myrtle can all be found here. This is a delicate location so please do your best to stay on the trail and remember bogs by nature are wet and muddy.

Red Trail

2.7km

This trail makes a large 2.7km circle of the Slieve Aughty property, passing through the ruins of an old village, Coillte pine forest and a unique Lodgepole Pine forest, to finally return you through one of the cross country courses with a lovely view at the top of the hill. Fallow deer are commonly spotted on this trail. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended for this trail as it can be mucky and rocky in places.

Blue Trail

6.5km

If you have a couple of hours to spare the Blue Trail is a rewarding walk along the banks of the Duniry River. In the spring a stunning blanket of bluebells spread along open areas and wild garlic grows under the canopy. There are gates on this trail; please leave them as you find them.

Green Trail

7.4km

This is the longest way marked trail around Slieve Aughty, the trail travels through stands of established and harvested pine trees. At the centre of the trail you will find a preserved stand of oak and beech which was established at the beginning of the 1800’s and it is a real prize for any nature lover. Pay attention throughout the trail and you may notice the remains of an ancient road beneath you. The trees here are deep-rooted and layered with moss; it does not take much to picture fairies and trolls cavorting under these substantial old branches.
