As the former European Region of Gastronomy, there’s no where quite like Galway to experience fresh, local food. From seafood to cheeses, beers to chocolate, there’s truly something for everyone here.

The city is bursting with award-winning restaurants and buzzing nightlife and almost every small town around the county hosts a local Farmer’s Market with local homegrown produce to try.

Kinvara Coastal Village

Experience the wild Atlantic coastline in the seaside village of Kinvara and taste some delicious seafood while you’re there! We highly recommend Pier Head with the perfect location offering superb views of both Kinvara Bay and the nearby Dunguaire Castle. Aim to visit Kinvara on a Friday morning and check out their local Farmer’s Market. If you’re in the mood for oysters and seriously fresh seafood, another great restaurant is Moran’s Oyster Cottage in Kilcolgan, just ten minutes from Kinvara. All their dishes are produced with locally sourced seafood. The location is stunning too right on Kilcolgan River with a trail leading out to the headland, perfect for stretching your legs after your meal.

Galway Markets

The market in Galway city has been taking place for centuries, just beside St Nicholas’ Church in a laneway off Shop Street. It runs all year round on Saturday and Sundays but we recommend getting their early to guarantee the best choice. Try some delicious local and international foods from homemade bread at the Happy Loaf or Coolfin Organic Bakery stalls or even sushi from Kappa-ya Sushi stall. Stop into Sheridan’s cheesemonger located on the corner for the makings of the perfect gourmet picnic and enjoy by the riverside or at the Spanish Arch, just like the locals. If you’re staying around Christmas time, the market takes on a festive energy with mulled wine and seasonal treats on offer.

Hazel Mountain Chocolate

Visit Ireland’s only bean-to-bar chocolate factory, a must-see for the serious chocolate lovers! The Hazel Mountain Chocolate factory is located in the heart of the Burren, Co Clare. The chocolate experts give 45-minute tours describing the process that goes into each handmade chocolate bar. Tastings are of course offered along the way and you can enjoy the finished products after in the café with delicious coffee and cakes as well as the handmade chocolates. Seasonal Foodie Festivals

Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival

Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival is the world’s longest running oyster festival. Galway is the only place in Ireland where you can get native flat Galway Oysters in natural wild oyster beds. It takes place on the last weekend in September and is a must for anyone serious about their seafood. Taking place over three days, you can sample the freshest oysters and other local seafood. Check out cookery demonstrations with the best of Irish chefs, live music and children’s entertainment throughout the weekend.

Galway Continental Christmas Market

Galway comes alive at Christmas and the heart of it is at the annual Christmas market in Eyre Square. Try some delicious mulled wine to get in the festive spirit as well as local and international treats such as crepes, waffles and German fare such as bratwurst and pretzels and of course German beers in the Bier Keller.
