Follow in the footsteps of two of Ireland’s most influential literary figures and see the landscapes, sites and people who inspired some of their greatest works.

Start at St Brendan’s Cathedral here in Loughrea following the trail loop to Gort and back taking in sights including Coole Park, Thoor Ballykee and Killinane Graveyard.

St. Brendans Cathedral

Loughrea, 1.7km, 3 minute drive/10 minute walk

Described as the jewel in the crown of the Celtic Revival, the magnificent St. Brendan’s Cathedral is ornately decorated and features an unrivalled collection of Irish stained glass.

Next door is the Clonfert Dioceasan Museum which contains a range of fascinating items including the oldest surviving carved wooden statue in Ireland (c 1180 AD), the 500 year old Matheus Macraith Chalice, spectacular vestments and items from the penal times. 30 minute audio tours of the cathedral are available from the museum.

Woodville is home to a restored walled kitchen garden along with a museum outlining the fascinating connection to Lady Augusta Gregory at Woodville. Come for a visit to this romantic secret garden in the West of Ireland and enjoy the sights, scents and colours contained within the original stone walls.

Set at the foot of the Slieve Aughty Mountains, the walled gardens of Woodville House have been carefully restored to their former glory. The gardens supplied the house with fruit, vegetables and flowers throughout the year and features colourful herbaceous borders, established fruit trees and serene fountain. There is also a fascinating museum outlining Lady Augusta Gregory’s connection to Woodville House.

Finnertys water powered flour mill has been run by the same family for generations. See the massive mill machinery powered by the Cappagh river and learn of a bygone era.

Kylemore Abbey

Kylemore, 118km, 2 hour drive

Kylemore Abbey is a Benedictine monastery founded in 1920 on the grounds of Kylemore Castle, in Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. The abbey was founded for Benedictine Nuns who fled Belgium in World War I.
